Cross Words Between My Sweetie and Me
CD Timeless CBC 1-008

If I should celebrate the centenary of this record that I heard so many times, it would be with a light cocktail or a glass of champagne. I really enjoy listening to what was going on in a New York studio on March 30, 1925, even if it may not be a life changer in any way.
There is the blending of sounds, the tandem of trombone and bass sax played by Tommy Dorsey and Adrian Rollini. There is the light touch from Red Nichols trumpet when he plays around with the melody in vo-do-de-o-do style and the also light sound of saxophone from Jimmy Dorsey. I even find the vocal by Billy Jones and the lyrics charming, not to forget the solid banjo sound of Tommy Felline. And I’m not disappointed by the ending.
In short, it’s music to put me in a good mood, and I’m glad that a lot of this kind has survived on record.
What we hear is the reflection of a happy time when the California Ramblers played every night in their Ramblers Inn and recorded with part of the orchestra under different names, such as The Little Ramblers, that they used here.
