Weary Blues

LP Capitol T1172

I’m glad that I’m not a critic. Because in that case, I would have had to deal with the cover, the title of the LP, the choice of tunes, their relation to the blues, and so on. And I might also have gotten into the devastating critic’s habit of speaking more about what is not there, what I’m missing.

No, I’m just here to enjoy what I hear, if there is something to enjoy.

I enjoy Bobby Hackett’s fluent and assured playing, and the setting that combines a rather large string section with the jazz quartet, including Dave McKenna at the piano, makes it easy listening.

Most of the music is predictable, but on this number there is inventiveness in the choice of tempo. I have heard so many versions of this classic tune, but it has never been played this way.
