Swanee Shuffle

Timeless Historical CBC 1-081

The Charleston Chasers was a New York studio group whose jazz content and top-notch musicianship was guaranteed and provided by men like the Dorsey Brothers and Benny Goodman. Formally their music was what we call hot dance music and the same can be said about the other groups on this CD.

A session under the direction by Red Nichols was made in 1929 under the somewhat strange name “Midnight Airedales”.

In the attractive tune Swanee Shuffle by Irving Berlin from the early talkie Hallelujah we get a nice vocal by Red McKenzie who apart from a good voice has the quality to make you stop and listen to what he has to say. Glenn Miller’s trombone lays out the melody for us. Fud Livingston has a little solo spot on tenor in a tight and well performed arrangement.
