Edward Cliff “Ukulele Ike” Edwards should be famous to generations of music lovers thanks to his role as Jimmie Cricket and the one who sings When You Wish Upon a Star, but I doubt if many people know this.
More important is his accomplishment as a pioneer singer with ukulele and also imitator of trumpet (preceding Mills Brothers) to fill out the space and make variation in his one-man act. He was a big star in the twenties and then almost forgotten.
There is interesting accompaniment throughout on this double CD, most of it by Red Nichols small groups. Here we have Andy Sanella on alto, Joe Venuti on violin and with a nice little guitar solo the unforgettable Eddie Lang.
