Linger Awhile

LP Classic Jazz Masters Riverside 8813

I was old enough to work, and I had some money to spend. I went and ordered some records. It took time, but finally I got a letter saying that they had one of them, and it was this one.

Was I disappointed? No way; I took in the music with no objections whatsoever. The melodies, the arrangements, the sound of the early twenties, and the jazz that became more and more evident on every track. I learned about saxofon players Coleman Hawkins and Don Redman, but above all I listened to the trumpets of Elmer Chambers, Howard Scott, and Joe Smith. I wish that they knew about mine and many others interest in their playing.

One of the tracks was this, and I loved it! Yes, even the “corny” bits, but especially the last chorus.

Later, I found more music by the great “Fletcher Henderson and his Orchestra” and a lot more of their jazz music, but I still remember the first impressions.
