Sweet Substitute

This tune has long been a favorite of mine. At the end of his life, Jelly Roll Morton started a publishing company with a friend, and some of the songs that he then wrote are as sad but attractive as this one. I have played it with a trio with bass sax, as a duet with piano, and now with my one-man band.

Sweet substitute, Sweet substitute
She tells me that she's mine, all mine
Does anything I tell her,
'Cause love is blind.

She's got such loving ways
My head is in a daze
My new recruit is mighty sweet and cute
I'm crazy 'bout my substitute
