Sally, Won’t You Come Back?

Ace of Hearts AH 168

Sometime in the 60s, on Midsummer’s Day, I woke up late. A friend had slept over secretly but luckily my mother and her man had gone somewhere. We listened to this record and tried to remember what had happened the (wild) night before.

Trombonist Jack Teagarden is in focus here playing with a group led by Red Nichols in 1929. I guess that Sally was the name of many girlfriends in the “Roaring Twenties”. Sweet and hot is demonstrated in the two vocals here, the first by Scrappy Lambert and then an inserted blues sung by Teagarden himself. Jimmy Dorsey plays the clarinet solo.
