Walking the Dog

The title says a lot. The Dorseys dominate the record and in the rhythm section and with often thoughtful solo spots Eddie Lang is the master. He is also the nominal leader of several sessions and on this particular recording that produced Walking the Dog Lang is using men from his employer Paul Whiteman’s orchestra. In this otherwise heavily arranged tune we also hear solos from Andy Secrest on cornet, Bill Rank on trombone and Izzy Friedman on clarinet. Hoagy Carmichael is at the piano (they also recorded two of his compositions at the occasion) and he quickly switches to celesta behind Eddie Lang’s guitar solo.
