I Left My Sugar Standing in the Rain

Inspiration for this song came first and foremost from a recording by Bing Crosby with Paul Whiteman’s Rhythm Boys, where they incorporate it with Mississippi Mud.

Later I found a favorite also in an excellent recording by Adrian Rollini and The Goofus Five with a charming vocal by Beth Challis.

The short lyrics go like this:

'Cause I left my sugar standing in the rain,
And my sugar melted away,
Sweeter than the sugar from the sugar cane,
Didn't mean to treat her that way.

I guess my sweetie thought I was a low down kind,
Didn't realize that she was so refined, Oh!
I left my sugar standing in the rain,
And my sugar melted away.
