Fools Rush In

LP CBS BPG 62100

This is the third of the triple LP album dedicated to Mildred Bailey that CBC released sometime in the 60s. I’ve already chosen a tune from volume one. If I look at all three, I notice that I learned many songs from her versions that have later been considered to belong to the American Song Book and that have been used by many ballad singers. I don’t know if it was especially her versions that inspired others, but it’s a fair guess.

Are you a fool when you fall in love? It’s often the case when you look upon the situation in retrospect. Here the famous phrase “fools rush in where wise men fear to tread” is used with “angels” instead of “wise men.” Johnny Mercer wrote the lyrics.

We are now in the year 1940, when Eddie Sauter was the arranger for her studio group that included flute and oboe among the instruments and where clarinets were preferred to saxophones.
