Red Hot Henry Brown
HEP CD 1081

Attempting to attract more record buyers, the early jazz studio groups took on names of southern states or towns, although they lived and worked in New York. The Tennessee Tooters that recorded for Vocalion between 1924 and 1926 was one of them.
To begin with, two instrumental virtuosos were engaged in the group: Benny Krueger on alto and C-melody sax and Harry Reser, the banjo player. The rest of the personnel is not a hundred percent certain, but it’s believed that the trumpet player who replaces Red Nichols on this session is Harry Gluck and that the trombone player who takes a solo in the style of his predecessor Miff Mole is Charlie Panelli. Furthermore, the piano is supposed to be played by Rube Bloom and the tuba and drums by Gus Helleberg and Harry Lottman, respectively.
This happened on March 25, 1925, and it can also most certainly be supposed that none of the participants had the faintest idea that we would enjoy their work a hundred years later.
The tune was also well recorded by the Charleston Chasers, among others.
