Original Dixieland One-Step

LP Jazzology J-5

Arranged Dixieland with the usual repertoire is normally not my cup of tea, but when it’s as here played by some veterans of a status like Frank Signorelli, Jimmy Lytell, Miff Mole, and Chauncey Morehouse on piano, clarinet, trombone, and drums, respectively, I listen with rueful respect and interest. All were members of some of the best groups in the classic jazz period and made substantial contributions to the development of the music.

Miff Mole’s own playing falls somewhere in between his robust, effective ensemble style of the early twenties with five-piece groups and the elegant, versatile solo style that he exposed later in the decade.

Lee Castle on trumpet and Jack Lesberg on bass complete the ensemble called “Miff Mole and his All Stars.”

Maybe not an immortal performance, but good enough entertainment to go with the morning cup of coffee.
