This is Jimmie Noone’s Apex Club Orchestra. According to the personnel on the record, we hear, besides Noone on clarinet, Doc Poston on alto sax, Zinky Cohn on piano, and Junie Cobb on banjo or guitar. The tuba player is Bill Newton, and at the drums we have Johnny Wells.

I have no name for the vocalist, and I don’t feel that I need to look for him in other eventual recordings. It’s, of course, the contrasting swinging chorus after the vocal and the interplay between the two reed players that gives the record its value. The echo effect in the first chorus is also amusing. I think that Cobb may be playing a four-string, tenor resonator guitar, an instrument that was used at this time, around 1930, in the transition from banjo to guitar.
