The Skunk

CD Hot’n Sweet 152292

Today’s hot jazz is a tune recorded in New York but with strong influence from New Orleans. The latter town is the hometown of the records bandleader and banjo player Buddy Christian.

The two wild clarinet players are Happy Caldwell and Bob Fuller, and Charlie Irvis plays trombone. Mike Jackson or possibly Clarence Williams plays piano. But the cornet player remains a mystery. John R. T. Davies’ theory that there was one hitherto unknown musician who should be responsible for this performance and a few other sessions with hot cornet playing has been dismissed in an article in the Frog Annual, where instead Charlie Gaines was suggested.
