It Won’t Be You
CD FROG DGF 45

The agent Frank Walker sent Clarence Williams down south to search for a special female singer. He came back with someone that, according to Walker, looked like seventeen and was scared to death. But he forgot about all that when he heard her sing. When she sang, she meant every note, every syllable. She was all blues from when she rose in the morning until she went to bed at night. Blues was all her life. She could laugh and have fun too, but the happy periods did not last very long.
She was Bessie Smith, and today she sings It Won’t Be You. That’s a hard thing to hear when your lover breaks up with you. Whatever bad the next guy will be, it won’t be you!
Demas Dean and Charlie Green accompany on trumpet and trombone with Fred Longshaw at the piano.
